1 Peter 2:9 NIV
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
Peter is speaking to you in this verse! This verse is for all Christians. Although Peter wrote this a very long time ago to new Christians facing persecution, his words apply to all generations. You are a chosen person. You are a part of a royal priesthood and a holy nation. You belong to God! Ladies, you are anointed just as the priests were anointed in ancient times. Allow me to show you how and when you were anointed into the royal priesthood. You may not realize the magnitude of this act, but it happened whether you saw it or not. You were anointed by God, even if you did not recognize it. Today I am going to help you see your anointing. Isn’t this going to be fun!
Take a look at how God anointed his priests in Leviticus.
Leviticus 8:12
He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him to consecrate him.
Moses poured the anointing oil on Aaron’s head. Moses also used anointing oil to consecrate Aaron’s sons as priests.
King David was also anointed by God. Samuel, Israel’s priest and judge, was sent by God to anoint David as king of Israel long before David received the throne. In 1 Samuel 16:12 we learn that God told Samuel, “Rise and anoint him, he is the one” when David, a young shepherd boy, appeared in front of Samuel.
1 Samuel 16:13 (NIV)
So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came on David in power. Samuel then went to Ramah.
This was one of three times that David was anointed king of Israel. David was anointed later in his life as king over Judah after the death of King Saul, Israel’s first king. (2 Samuel 2) Then he was anointed again king over Israel at a later date.
When Samuel anointed David king the first time, it was not a public display. He was a young boy then. In fact Saul was still king of Israel, when Samuel anointed David. David was the youngest son, a shepherd for his father, yet God anointed him. David became king at the age of 30 years old. He reigned 7.5 years over Judah and 33 years over all Israel. However God anointed David when he was still a young boy. David may not have realized the significance of the oil anointing on him. He probably could not see what his future held. Notice what happened to David after Samuel took the oil and anointed him - the Spirit of God came on him.
1 Samuel 16:13
…from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power
From that day on God’s Spirit came on David in power. This is important to remember when I explain your anointing from God. This verse states that the Spirit of God came on David in power, but it does not tell us if David realized it.
Although a very powerful judge and priest over Israel, Samuel, anointed Jesse’s son with oil and spoke of him as chosen by the Lord, it appears that life continued as before. Maybe David, nor his father, recognized that the anointing had brought the Spirit of the Lord on David. In 1 Samuel 16:19 Saul sends messages to Jesse requesting his son David come and play the harp for him. Saul says, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.” Obviously Jesse sent his anointed son (with the Spirit of the Lord in power) back to tend the sheep. David – high priest anointed, Spirit filled, chosen one -was back to sheep tending. Wow!
If your son had the Spirit of the Lord on him in power, would you send him out to simply tend your sheep? I think they may not have recognized the Spirit on David, and maybe David did not know the magnitude of it either (at least not until he killed Goliath). Why Jesse sent his three oldest sons to war with King Saul of Israel while David stilled tended his sheep. Why would you not send your anointed son who walked with the Spirit of God Almighty in power to take care of this war? Could it be the Spirit of God was not fully recognized yet? This is all speculation; however consider at least the fact that David was anointed while still a young shepherd. His anointing from Samuel did not change his immediate circumstances. He did not suddenly take the throne or become an instant success. However, when that anointing came it is written “from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power.” So please know that anointing from God brings his Spirit on you in power. If may not change your current circumstances or give you an instant miracle, but anointing of God bring the Spirit on you.
Read 2 Corinthians 1: 21-22 as Paul speaks to believers about their identity in Christ.
2 Corinthians 1: 21-22 NIV
Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
Paul states that God anointed us. He also tells us that God put his Spirit in our hearts. We are anointed! When you accepted Christ into your life as your Savior, God anointed you then. God’s Word says that Christians are anointed and given God’s Spirit. This type of anointing comes only after the death, resurrection and ascension of Christ. This is your anointing because you live in the days after Christ returned to heaven. Lucky You!
In our next lesson, you will learn how the Holy Spirit was put in you, and how he can work in your life. You will gain a better understanding of how the Holy Spirit works in you. You will gain confidence in your anointing and hopefully realize the power God put in you. Gaining such knowledge will give you one more reason the give God thanks.
This week focus on a portion of 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 NIV -
He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts
Believe the Word of God, and know that God anointed you. Think about his seal of ownership that was set on you when he anointed you. God’s very Spirit was put in your heart. Don’t tell me you are not anointed – God’s Spirit is in you. I don’t care if you feel it or not, I trust God’s Word. Take these words and declare them on your life! Say, “God anointed me.” Say, “God set his seal of ownership on me.” Say, “God put his Spirit in my heart.” Say it loud. Say it often. Let Satan hear you declare God’s truth. If it is difficult to say because you just don’t feel it’s truth, say it anyway. You have heard God’s Word say we need to renew our mind. So renew it. Even if you don’t feel it, say, “God anointed me, set his seal of ownership on me and put his Spirit in my heart.” That is how you renew your mind sister.
This week renew your mind by declaring God’s Word to be true, and thank God for his truth. Thank God that he anointed you. Thank God that he set his seal of ownership on you. Thank God that he put his Spirit in your heart.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
